Viagra (sildenafil) is used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection for satisfactory sexual activity in men, also known as impotence. Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type5 (PDE5) inhibitors. A new prescription drugmaker is looking to cut a record of selling unapproved drugs to people who need them less than a week before their trip to Mexico.
A $5 million cash price for the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra will be the lowest ever for a drugmaker. The drug is the second most expensive medicine on the U. S. market, after Lipitor.
Sales in the U. reached $1.6 billion last year. In Mexico, the drugmaker is trying to cut prices.
“This is a huge deal for us,” said Cindy Pearson, an executive at Pfizer, which has an international presence in the U. and Europe. “We have been doing this for a long time.”
Drugmakers also are looking to boost sales by selling a combination of popular medications — including a heart drug called PDE5 inhibitors — and generic versions of them.
Pfizer’s Viagra was approved in May and went on sale in April. In Mexico, Pfizer is trying to cut prices.
Pfizer is trying to get a generic version of the drug that is similar in many ways to Viagra. The drugmaker is trying to market a version of the pill that’s more affordable.
But drugmakers are also trying to sell other versions of the drug, including a version of a heart drug called L-arginine. That drug has been approved in 20 countries and is the only one on the market that is not in competition with Viagra.
Pfizer said it would consider selling the L-arginine drug in order to reduce the potential cost of insurance. That’s a much lower cost than the $5 million Viagra would cost to sell.
The drugmaker is also trying to market a version of a popular diabetes drug called metformin, which is similar to Glucophage. It has not yet been approved by the FDA.
Pfizer’s U. patent for the drug expires in September. It’s unclear how much the $5 million price tag would cost.
Sales of the drug have been steady, Pearson said. Pfizer is selling the pills through pharmacies to help patients get the drugs.
“We’re a very big player in the world of erectile dysfunction drugs,” she said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to get people to buy this drug in a way that they can trust to the manufacturer and to their physicians.”
VIDEOSales of the drug increased sharply last year as more U. residents got tested and started seeking treatment for their ED, Pearson said.
“We continue to see the value of this drug coming from our patients,” she said.
Pfizer, which has a $10 billion drug patent to its name, is also looking for ways to cut the cost of the drug. But Pearson said it is trying to keep the prices low. She said the company has other opportunities.
“This is a huge deal for us,” Pearson said. “This could mean more money for our shareholders than we are willing to pay.”
Pfizer also is looking to increase sales of the anti-obesity drug, sold under the brand name Saxenda, as well as other treatments for heart disease.
“We continue to see great growth for the company,” Pearson said.
Men are the most likely to buy erectile dysfunction (ED) pills over the counter in the United States, according to a new report. The drugmaker, which makes Viagra and Cialis, is testing its product in a new market in China, but it's not sure how many men would be able to buy the pill over the counter.
The drug, called sildenafil, is already sold over the counter in the United States as an ED pill and works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which can cause the penis to become erect and hard.
The new study, a double-blind, crossover study, is based on more than 2,000 people who take sildenafil and have been instructed to fill out a questionnaire about their experiences with ED pills.
"We are now confident that we can fill out the questionnaire and take the results to the next stage," said Dr. Emily Johnson, a urology and sexology professor at New York University's School of Medicine.
"We have been looking at the general population, and it's been a little bit of a mystery," she said.
The study is part of a larger study that's also designed to test the efficacy of a new drug, Viagra, on the sexual side of the blood-flow problem. The new study, published in the April issue of the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, shows that sildenafil, the brand name for Viagra, works similarly, but the study also suggests that the drug may help men with ED experience better sexual performance.
Viagra is the second approved drug for the treatment of ED. Last year, Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest pharmaceutical company, was the first to market sildenafil in the U. S.
It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow more freely and to help with the ability to get an erection. Sildenafil can also help men who have high blood pressure or heart disease to get a better night's sleep.
While it's not clear how the new study will affect those men, Johnson said, the research suggests that a better response will be seen by men who experience ED, including men with a history of heart disease.
"In the first-degree, two-way interaction analysis, men who take sildenafil reported significantly better responses in sexual function compared to men who took a placebo," she said.
The new study will run for 18 months, the researchers said.
The study's results are based on two years of interviews, and they were collected from 5,000 men who took Viagra, Viagra-containing medications and Viagra pills. They were followed up on their daily health, and some of the men reported that their erections were improved.
The study was funded by Pfizer, maker of Viagra, and the National Institutes of Health.
In the United States, Pfizer Inc. is allowed to sell sildenafil and other drugs over the counter. But some of the drugs are not allowed to be sold in the U.
Dr. Emily Johnson, the study's lead author, said the new research is the first study to test sildenafil as a treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction.
"The new research is very preliminary, and we don't have information on the safety or effectiveness of sildenafil," Johnson said.
Viagra, the first drug to be marketed in the U. S., was the first to be tested in men with ED, which is the most common sexual problem.
"It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis," said Dr. Mark W. Ditka, a urology professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
